Everyone at EML:

Welcome to EML!

If you're reading this, you are a Work Learn, co-op student, student volunteer, students doing coursework at EML, EML faculty members, UBC staff, or a prospective EML member. at the Emerging Media Lab. Congratulations on your excellent choice to join EML. We're pleased to have you.

These documents are an introduction to how we work at EML, the lab culture, professional expectations in our workplace, and a brief introduction to software we use. We've set the course up as a checklist, so all you have to do is go down the list! If any part is unclear, please reach out to us via email at emergingmedia.lab@ubc.ca, and we'll be happy to explain.

As a student worker or volunteer at EML, it's important to remember that this is a job, not a class. Your job term is not the same as the current semester.

We've created this onboarding documentation to explain what we expect from our team at EML both from a professional standpoint, as well as to outline what tools we use. Some of the material may seem extremely obvious to you, but not everyone knows all this stuff automatically. Either way, there's no shame in not knowing. Remember, this is many EML members' first job.
