Everyone at EML:

EML Projects

Most EML Work Learns and volunteers work on EML projects. If you get assigned to a project, you are expected to work on that project. If you really don't like it, you may ask EML staff about it, but you are not guaranteed to be assigned to a different project. We do take skills and interest into account when assigning projects.

Learn more about past EML projects here.

EMLx Projects

Anyone from EML may volunteer to work on an EMLx project. Are you in starting an EMLx project? Submit a form here, or tell a friend about it and start work together.

Project Assignments

As a Work Learn or co-op student, you'll be assigned to a project. This isn't always the project you might prefer.

If you really want to work on something else, please contact the Lab Supervisor. There's no guarantee that you can work on that one, and your skillset might be more needed on the one we first assign you, but we can at least discuss it.

As a volunteer, you are welcome to pick a first, second, and third choice for your project assignment, but your specific skills might be a better fit for one project or another.

Project Roles

EML projects have multiple team members, made up of EML staff, student workers, and volunteers. All student workers and volunteers report their project time in Clockify. There are three main roles:

Project Lead/Scrum Master

Project leads run the project, run meetings about the project, are ultimately responsible for making sure the Trello board and documentation is up to date, and for leading sprints. They are also responsible for filling out the Project Team Weekly Report form, which is automatically sent to EML staff, as well as the project's faculty member(s). Project leads are almost always Work Learn students.

Work Learns/UAAs/Volunteers

Work Learn students fill the bulk of the roles on EML projects, and usually spend most of their time in a development or design role. Volunteers work on tasks for the project, and may focus on very specific subsets of development or design.

Every week, project team members give updates to their project lead, who then submits the Project Team Weekly Report on their behalf.

EML Staff

Staff members advise and provide technical expertise. Some of the time, they also contribute as developers or designers.
