Helpful Tips For Co-op Students Going to Yellowknife
Purpose: This document was created to help you prepare the necessary documents and funds
BEFORE your departure to Yellowknife. This information may help to prevent some difficulties with
paperwork and make it an easier transition for you.
Introduction
Yellowknife is a gorgeous Northern City on the North End of Great Slave Lake. It is a community of about 20,000 that bustles with activity in the summer and winter. The summer life includes lots of outdoor activities like fishing, canoeing, sports and camping. If you are an avid outdoor enthusiasts then you will love the city and the opportunities the Ingraham trail has to offer. The city is very isolated from large communities with Edmonton being the closes large city to the south. The city has a fully functional airport or can be reached by vehicle either by ice road during the winter or ferry during the summer.
Finances
The cost of living is much higher in Northern Communities due to total isolation during short portions of the year. Isolated post allowance may be available depending on the company or level of government you work for. Ask your employer about your eligibility for isolated post allowances.
Insurance
I utilized health insurance that was made available through my home province that covers me when I am enrolled in school.
Housing
Housing costs can range from $700-$1000 and this is a price estimate for a bedroom within a house or apartment. Housing costs are incredibly high so most individuals live with a roommate, regardless of their age or location of their home in the city.
Transit
There is limited bus service. The city is small enough that you can get most places in a comfortable amount of time either by walking or biking. Most residence own a car for the winter commutes.
