Discrimination in Movies and Acting001:16, 26 July 2019

Hi, You have a good start and this is an interesting topic. Perhaps, I would have more subheadings breaking down how different types of films are portrayed such as Asian films and how they are represented in society. As well, I would also discuss how movies are being represented from the past and now. I think talking about this shift brings it closer to discussing about course content through an intersectional lens. I am looking forward to reading your final content. thanks!

A few suggestions

Hello,

I really like your topic! I think there a few things you could branch off into. In Hollywood, for example, you could talk about the way older actresses are discriminated against and how ethnic minorities are underrepresented. The first suggestion is something I've heard in interviews from older actresses (I think Susan Sarandon might have said that at some point), but the lack of representation for brown people is often astounding. For example, if you've seen the Avatar - The Last Airbender movie, the cast is almost entirely caucasian even though the story is primarily based in Japan. Similarly, in Prince of Persia, the prince is played by Jake Gyllenhaal - a caucasian man. Additionally, you could also talk about how the film and TV still tend to perpetuate stereotypes about certain people and countries and often serve as a propaganda vehicle for western exceptionalism (I think Argo). You could talk about how things are getting better too, though.

Hope this helped! I'm looking forward to reading the rest of it.

Wiki Discussion- Discrimination in Movies and Acting

Hello,

I can see that you are starting to divide your ideas with the headings you provided in your draft. I have a few suggestions that I think can help you narrow down the broad topic. Discrimination in the media has been a widely discussed topic and we've definitely seen a shift from the past to the present. I think it might be important for you to focus on movies/media from a specific culture or industry. For example, discrimination in Asian films is completely different from discrimination in America or the Western movies. Since media exists everywhere, it will be easier for you to pinpoint research or facts on specific examples of discrimination by narrowing it down to one part of the world. I think it's good to continue to explore the role of directors and scriptwriters when you explore factors that shape media discrimination. Their roles can often have a significant impact on who or what is represented in a movie. My last suggestion would be to add visuals and links to specific movie examples to engage your audience on the wiki page. Good luck!

Suggestions

Hi! I really like your topic since I think it continues to be a very relevant issue in today's society. I think it might be helpful to explore how Hollywood has historically depicted different cultures in very stereotypical and often offensive ways. One of the most famous examples I can think of is Breakfast at Tiffany's where Mickey Rooney (a white actor) plays an Asian landlord in an outright racist manor. This is just one of many examples though. I think providing historical context is a good way to lead into how representation in Hollywood continues to be an issue to this day. You could look at how there is not only a lack of diversity in casting, but also in writing, producing, directing etc. Overall, great start and I look forward to reading your final submission!

Hi,

I like your analysis and topic of choice I think there are many ways to approach this topic. I think the perspective you initially start with is very unique that producers tend to play a major role in the way roles are established and who is picked for that role. There's definitely a lot to explore as well especially with actors being given roles of different ethnicities being highly problematic. Definitely on the right track.

Suggestion

Hello,

Good start to a very interesting topic! In regards to discrimination in movies and TV shows, there are many issues that can be discussed. One suggestion I have to go further than just the characters that are filmed, would be to discuss the issue of casting. Many casting directors go into casting with a race in mind for specific characters, which then limits the options for minorities to be cast in a role that is beyond stereotypical characters. Nowadays, blind casting has been implemented in several major TV shows, such as Grey's Anatomy, which helps allow individuals from any race/sexual orientation/gender to be cast into a full-fledged and well-rounded character.

Hello,

One interesting topic that you can broach in this wiki project is to include the obvious lack of proper representation in film. For example, you can examine the whitewashing that is done in films where white actors are cast in a non-white role. I find this really interesting as you watch a film, knowing that for example a certain character should look more Asian since her parents are Asian yet the actress cast for this role is someone of European descent. You could also include the concept that exists in mainstream films where the casting is not very diverse and the majority of actors and actresses are white.

Discrimination in Movies and Acting

Hello,

I have a few suggestions for your wiki that I think could really help your page. I think it would be good to talk about historical representations of people of colour in films, as well as people with varying gender identities, and class. Another suggestion I have is to look up Stuart Hall and his views on representation as I feel they are very important when discussing discrimination in film and representation in media more generally. Also, an example you could use just to further explain discrimination and representation is the 2016 Oscar nominations which featured a lack of diversity which is very problematic.
