Where is Information Coming from

This dictionary was created as a compilation of previous work on Shoshoni and Goshute. In particular, entries in this dictionary come from the Wick R. Miller collection (1966–1972): a series of fieldnotes, research, ethnographies, and recordings collected by Miller during his time with the Shoshone and Goshute communities.

This is an online dictionary.

A separate Shoshoni Talking Dictionary is hosted on the Shoshoni Language Project website. This dictionary include the same content as the Shoshoni Dictionary, but includes audio and images.

This dictionary includes multiple dialects, including: Duck Valley, Panamint, Big Smoky Valley Shoshoni, Goshiute, Ruby Valley, Shoshone of Idaho/Fort Hall, Duckwater, and Ely Shoshoni.

This is a bilingual, bidirectional dictionary.

How are Entries Organised

Entries in the Shoshoni Dictionary are searchable by English and by Shoshone. When browsing entries are organised alphabetically. Entries begin with the Shoshoni word, followed by its English definition, its part of speech, the dialect it comes from, and the previous work(s) where it was first recorded.

Not included in the dictionary proper, but hosted on the same website are a series of resources designed for teaching: illustrated books, audio books, videos, writing lessons, and a play put on by the students of the Shoshone/Goshute Youth Language Apprenticeship Program.

Other Notes

Example sentences and images are included in other resources on the website, just not the dictionary. A second resource which seems to be based on this dictionary, called Shoshoni Talking Dictionary, is also available on this website. This dictionary includes multimedia elements.
