How are Entries Organised

Entries are organised alphabetically by Lakota in the first section Lakȟótiyapi–English (Lakota–English). Entries include the Lakota headword, the part of speech, the English translation (or description where a one-to-one translation is not possible), variations in spelling, and cross references. Many entries also include an example phrase. Affix entries contain example words that use the head affix. Entries are organised alphabetically by English in the English–Lakȟótiyapi (English–Lakota) section. Entries include the English headword, the Lakota translation, and the part of speech. Entries with more than one Lakota translation are listed numerically and include an English definition/description for each word. Some entries also include variational spelling.

Between the two dictionary sections there is a detailed grammar that includes information about Lakota orthography and alphabet, phonology, verbs, nouns, pronouns, determiners, postpositions, conjunctions, "T-words" (i.e., words in Lakota that start with 'tu-' or 'to-'), enclitics, adverbs, interjections, sentence structure, changes in fast speech, and changes as the language modernizes.

Prior to the dictionary sections, there is an introduction to the Lakota language that includes a history of lexicography with Lakota.
