Splitting off sections into their own pages

Splitting off sections into their own pages

I was thinking of splitting off the sections on this page into their own unique pages and then re-including them here on the main listing page. The benefit of this will be that people could then embed a sub-section of the master list and add it to their own websites (e.g. via WordPress WikiEmbed). Right now (unless I'm missing something), it's an all-or-nothing with embedding content from this wiki page. I hope this makes sense, but if anyone has a better approach or reason to not do this, by all means revert things back.

Adrian, do you know what the status of a proper social media directory is? Did you see this proposal: http://drupal.it.ubc.ca/case-study/social-media-directory? It could nicely fit into the Cardinals site with Cardinals being in a good position to maintain that content actively.

The advantage of something like that would be that we could tag accounts, allow filtering/facets, export into various types of feeds (RSS, XML, JSON, global vs. for certain tags etc.). We might even be able to check automatically if the accounts are still active and delist if they appear abandoned.

Our unit will collect more social media channels as part of our degree (http://www.grad.ubc.ca/prospective-students/graduate-degree-programs) and faculty (http://www.grad.ubc.ca/prospective-students/faculties) listings as well. Right now the aggregated view is at http://www.grad.ubc.ca/campus-community/multimedia-social-networking I would be glad to get this information from somewhere else, but to get it into the degree program listing, each account would have to be tagged with the SISC program and degree codes. I am not sure if the wiki can deliver on such requirements.

This might be a discussion better moved off this talk page, but briefly: Yes, I've seen the proposed example and had actually done the same thing within the Cardinals site originally. A few factors at play kept it from progressing beyond a proof of concept (mostly buy in / participation, infrastructure and formal ownership of such a piece). This might be changing with the organizational changes happening and is a discussion that can probably be opened up again shortly. For now, though, the Wiki has proven to generate the largest level of participation and contributions, so I'm inclined to keep working with the progress we've made here on the wiki until we have a better sense of what direction an "official/proper" directory will go.

You could use Transclusion http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Transclusion to pull sections into other pages then embed that page.

Thanks, Scott. Transclusion is what I had in mind (and was what I was trying to say with "re-including"), just couldn't remember the term for it!
