Gender Discrimination in Pay Gap in Korea

Hello,

I was very interested in your topic choice, gender discrimination in pay gap in Korea. I feel myself that I hear about gender discrimination in terms of pay in the workplace but I am unaware of the particular struggles nations may have. I went to Seoul, Korea over the summer and had to opportunity to meet many individuals and one of the people I had met did talk about how all of the higher management at the hotel branch she was working at were all male. She also continued to talk about the heir of the hotel business she worked at and the fact that the business's successor will be the son of the founder and not his daughter. This made me realize how gender differences are still present in today's society, especially when it comes to the workforce.

Have you experienced any gender discrimination in terms of pay in your day to day life or have come across any interesting stories of others being affected by this mistreatment? I would love to hear them!

I believe that this gender discrimination in pay gap exists worldwide, but it is especially more prominent in Korea due to the stereotypes of men and superior than women, and have bigger responsibilities. I personally saw a lot of my friends (as interns and full time workers not getting promoted or getting raise in paycheck because she was female, and a lot of male friends being promoted after couple of months, and raise within 6 months. This problem has been pointed out by a lot of feminists in society, and also was pointed out by the president herself. I believe that the president goes through a very difficult time trying not to be bias, but it cannot be helped but to show through her method of governing.
