Reflections from the 2017 CATL cohort

Why have networks/digital practices become embedded in your discipline - what's the goal/hope/driver? If you don't think they have, why not?[wikitext]

Why?[wikitext]

  • growing disciplines can benefit from the connectivity of colleagues
  • efficient
  • students motivated to use the medium


Assessment:

  • Online quizzes and clicker questions to assign participation marks
  • Can be used for pre-assessment

Learning goals:

  • Covering more info
  • encourages to do the reading
  • collaboration and idea exchange
  • Engaging different learning styles: both introverts and extroverts

Some anonymity for comments/questions could be incorporated into learning

How do networked, digital practices influence disciplinary practice?[wikitext]

Variably.

  • Access to wider network of information makes disciplinary practice more agile. Practitioners can access more information than ever before and new concepts are more connected.
  • Practitioners can access information at any time therefore there is less requirement for recall in daily practice.
  • Does access make disciplinary knowledge more homogeneous however?
  • Improves collaboration within the discipline, disciplinary enrichment: real-time online editing, github, e.g. google docs, etc
  • Broadening access to specialized expertise
  • Changing patterns of information storage, could be networked; blogging, commenting
  • Transformation of teaching practices in the discipline

  • kills creativity, because when you see something other people do then you might not think about it in your own way
  • noise can be distracting, and overwhelming

Why should emerging networked, digital practices change how we teach in the discipline?[wikitext]

  • students are already networked and we should take advantage of their 'world' as a way to reach them
  • with the emerging digital networks, the environment of learning is changing, and learning no longer only occurs in the classroom, so in order to make learning more effective for them, we need to modify content to physical class, and guidance outside the classroom. By considering all the extra learning time outside the classroom, we can tailor new learning resources for outside the classroom.
  • making the learning online, it reaches them in the environment and network/context they are in.
         *using something the students are used to in their personal lives and how they communicate with each other
  • teaching should be innovative, and the world is innovative, and we want to show we are part of the evolving world
  • what the students learn facilitates them integrating their knowledge into their relevant contexts
  • reaching more people through feedback from instructors to questions on online classroom forums.
  • as academics, we tend to be insular within our 'bubbles,' but it's a requirement of our world to not be insular, so we should teach that way!
         *stay in touch with 'reality'
         *multidisciplinary
  • helps avoid expert syndrome by actually communicating with real people
  • active engagement strategies for the students: flexible data, sources, activities - e.g. gamification
  • helps the instructors to be more authentic through being dynamic and engaging online real-time resources

  • leaving learning resources for future generations of learners
  • cross-institution collaboration
