How to Implement Value Line?

  • A line of masking tape is placed on the floor, with each end of the line representing a position on a contentious issue, e.g. strongly disagree and strongly agree.
  • After an introduction to a controversial issue, ask students to stand at a point in the line that represents their opinion without talking to each other. They then discuss reasons why they stand where they stand along the line with their neighbours, reflect, and move to a new position if appropriate.

Why Use Value Line?

Students learn to identify and assess their own view and understanding. They also become aware of and appreciate other perspectives.
