How are Entries Organised

This dictionary is organized into three main parts: the introductory materials, which consists of several sections detailing the history of Mahican, the creation of Schmick's manuscript, and a section on historical phonology; Schmick's manuscript, edited and re-organised; and the Mahican-English glossary and index.

The bulk of the entries are contained in the Vocabularium Mahicandium. Entries in this section are organised alphabetically by English gloss and formatted into three columns. On the left is the English gloss, with comparative forms in square brackets. In the middle, in boldface type, is the Mahican word with any notes in square brackets. On the far right column is the German gloss. Many entries list example sentences, given in all three languages just like the headwords. Entries supplemented with outside sources have the source notes in square brackets below the entry. Following this section are two brief appendices that list the Mahican texts where example sentences came from, as well as Mahican words and phrases which were not found with a German translation. A few pages from the original manuscript are shown in the appendices to illustrate the transcription process.

The Mahican-English Glossary and Index is organised alphabetically by Mahican headword. Each entry contains only the English gloss and transcribers' notes. No other information is included in entries.
