Where is Information Coming from

Information in this dictionary mainly comes from speakers who worked with the author during her years of fieldwork, starting in 1956 through to publication. At the time of its publication, this was the fifth Miwok dictionary created. It is unclear whether the four previous dictionaries, which are listed in the Introduction, were used in the making of this dictionary. The biological entries are largely from C. Hart Merriam's Indian Names for Plants and Animals Among California and Other Western North American Tribes (1979).

How are Entries Organised

Entries are organised alphabetically by Plains Miwok (according to the alphabet listed on pp. 3 and 11) in the first section, Plains Miwok–English. Entries include the Plains Miwok headword (or affix), the part of speech, and the English definition (or a description of the word where a one-to-one definition is not possible). Many entries also include example words or phrases in both Plains Miwok and English and related words. Verb entries contain information to do with conjugation and tense. Entries are organised alphabetically by English in the English–Plains Miwok section, which is to be used as an index of the first section. Therefore, entries only include the English headword and the Plains Miwok translation(s).

There is a brief Grammatical Synopsis prior to the dictionary sections which explains the types of morphemes used in Plains Miwok, and information on nouns, verbs, and sentence structure. Following this, there is a description of the sound system.

The final page of the first dictionary section contains information about principal stem types and some examples.
