How Information is Cited

Previous work that was used to compile this dictionary is cited under Data source and consultants. The source materials for each entry is cited with abbreviations (i.e. SLN for Sven Liljeblad Notes). A list of these abbreviations can be found under Source on page 4 of the dictionary. Speaker, dialect, and source information is heavily cited in this dictionary.

Where is Information Coming from

Entries primarily come from dictionary 40,000 file slips collected by Liljeblad over 50 years. The file slips included the Northern Paiute entry, usually with an example sentence, and a rough English translation, and the initials of the consultant. This current dictionary notes that these files rarely included direct translations, and all direct translations include in the dictionary have been added for this publication.

Entires from other sources such as the field notes of Catherine Fowler (marked [CF] in entries), and work from Harold Abel (marked [HA] in entries) were incorporated.

The author note that the biggest dialect division is between 4 and 1, 2, and 3.

Most of the entries in this dictionary come from Liljeblad's slip files, which were primarily, but not entirely, based on work with Bannock speakers at Fort Hall.

Type of Dictionary

This is a bilingual, bidirectional dictionary.

How are Entries Organised

Entries in the Dictionary section are organised alphabetically by Northern Paiute headword, followed by a phonetic transcription of the entry. Each entry then notes the speaker from whom the word originated along with their community, the entry's part of speech, the entry's English definition, example sentences in some entries, a free translation of the example sentence into English, and the entry's semantic field/category (using abbreviations found in the Abbreviations section). The source for the main entry (e.g. Liljeblad's notes) as well as the dialect variant is marked using abbreviations.

the speaker who provided the entry, its part of speech, English definition, example sentences, semantic field, and the citation. Dialects are marked at the end of each entry. This section is followed by two small finder lists: an English―Northern Paiute-Bannock Finder List, organised alphabetically by English; and a Northern Paiute-Bannock―English Finder List, organised alphabetically by Northern Paiute.
