Where is Information Coming from

Information in this dictionary comes from previously documented language from speakers, specifically Laura Hodgkiss Metcalf and Daisy Wasson Codding who were documented by Morris Swadesh in 1953 and Annie Miner Peterson. The dictionary also includes example phrases from previously documented and/or published materials, heavily featuring Melville Jacobs' volume of Coos texts (1939).

How are Entries Organised

When first entering the dictionary, entries can be accessed by selecting the hamburger menu in the top left corner. They are listed alphabetically by English under the heading Laura Hodgkiss Metcalf Speaking Miluk. Entries include the English headword, the Miluk translation from Laura Hodgkiss Metcalf and Annie Miner Peterson, multiple spelling forms (phonetic, IPA, Jacobs' [1939] transcription), and a description of the phonetic pronunciation. All entries contain an audio clip from Laura Hodgkiss Metcalf, and some also contain clips from contemporary speakers. Entries also include a detailed description regarding pronunciation, spelling convention, an explanation of varying pronunciations from other speakers, some background details about Laura Hodgkiss Metcalf's recording (e.g., if Metcalf expressed hesitation), any example sentences or phrases from previously documented/published language resources, and other or related forms in Hanis and Miluk. Not all entries include all this information, but all contain a detailed description following the entry chart.
