Where is Information Coming from

Information in this dictionary comes from speakers and previously published language materials. Work with speakers was done in partnership with the Hocąk Wazija Haci Language Division in Mauston, Wisconsin from 2002 through 2008. Speaker Bill O'Brien received an individual acknowledgement as the most important source for this resource. The list of previously published materials used in creating this dictionary includes dictionaries, grammars, and other linguistic articles as listed in the Introduction on pg. 2-3. Dictionaries and lexicons of note are Johnson and Thorud's Wisconsin Winnebago Lexicon (1976), Marino's A Dictionary of Winnebago: An Analysis and Reference Grammar of the Radin Lexical File (1968), Miner's Winnebago Field Lexicon (1992), and White Eagle's A Lexical Study of Winnebago (1988).

This is a bilingual, bidirectional dictionary introduced by a brief grammar.

How are Entries Organised

Entries are organized alphabetically by Ho-Chunk in the Hocąk–English section of the dictionary and by English in the English–Hocąk dictionary section. Entries include the headword in either Ho-Chunk or English (depending on the section of the dictionary), the word class (e.g., verb, noun, adjective, etc.), the gloss/translation, and at least one example phrase in both English and Ho-Chunk. Some entries also include a category that connects the entry to the Thesaurus section that follows the dictionary. Word variations are numbered in bold, whereas italicized numbers mark first, second, or third person forms.

Prior to the dictionary sections there is a brief grammatical section which offers information on the Ho-Chunk sound system, writing system, and conjugation.

Following the dictionary sections there is a Thesaurus section. Entries in this section are organized by topic and contain the Ho-Chunk word, the word class, and the English gloss.

Other Notes

There is a companion resource to this dictionary, Hocąk Teaching Materials: Volume 2–Texts with Analysis and Translation and an Audio-CD of Original Texts (2010), which allows readers to listen to Ho-Chunk speech from speakers while reading stories in Ho-Chunk. Each story line is repeated four times: the first is the uninterrupted Ho-Chunk, the second is the Ho-Chunk words broken into their grammatical parts, the third is a literal translation into English, and the fourth is a free English translation. This volume comes with a CD when purchased from HFS Books ($99 USD for hardcover, $37.95 USD for paperback).
