Where is Information Coming from
Entries in this dictionary come from fieldwork done by the Dean and Lucille Saxtons with speakers on the Papago Indian Reservation beginning in 1953, and has been supplemented with work by other speakers and linguists. In particular the authors reference Papago Verb Stems (1909), Papago Nominal Stems (1913), and Notes on Papago Color Designations (1943) by Juan Dolores, an early O'odham linguist and informant.

Dialects Included
This dictionary includes the major Papago sub-dialects of Totoguani, Kokololodi, Gigimai, Huhhi'ula, and Huhuwash. The Pima dialect is marked where differences are known to the authors, with no sub-dialects listed.

How are Entries Organised
This work contains two dictionary sections, organised alphabetically, and five appendixes. The O'odham-English section is organised alphabetically by O'odham headword followed by the English definition. Dialect is marked after the headword when the form is specific to the dialect. Spanish borrowings are listed with their Spanish counterpart. The English-O'odham section is organised alphabetically by English headword followed by O'odham equivalent(s). No other information is included in entries.
Appendix I is a guide to the alphabet of O'odham. Appendix II is a guide to the dictionary and its use. Appendix III is a grammar of O'odham, intended primarily for linguists and language teachers. Appendix IV is a topical word list with the following categories: Sociological, written in paragraph format where the underlined O'odham kinship term is described in English, with a relationship chart included; Medical, organised alphabetically in two columns with English on the left and O'odham on the right; Fauna and Flora, organised by type of animal or plant in two columns with English on the left and O'odham on the right and featuring illustrations; and Calendar, with the O'odham term written in all capital letters and the English description below. Appendix V describes dialects and related languages and features a map.
