How Information is Cited

Speakers are cited by name in the Preface. Speakers who had passed away prior to the 1989 publication are not named according to Cocopah cultural practices. Previous works are cited in the Introduction (on p. 2) and References (pp. 531–534).

Where is Information Coming from

Information in this dictionary largely comes from speakers during the author's years of fieldwork in the 1960s. Key previously published works used include E.W. Gifford's The Cocopa (1933), William H. Kelly's Cocopa Ethnography (1977), and Tom Nevers and Carole Nevers' A Selection of Passages from the Gospel of Mark Presenting the Miracles of Jesus and A Selection of Passages from the Gospel of Mark Presenting the Cost of Christian Discipleship (both published in 1972). Other previous works used are listed in the References section.

How are Entries Organised

Entries are organized alphabetically by Cocopah in the Cocopa–English section of the dictionary, according to the alphabet on p. 8. Full-word entries include the Cocopah headword, the part of speech, and the English translation. When a word has been borrowed from English, this is identified at the end of the entry. Stem entries (i.e., affixes) include the Cocopah stem headword, morphological information, usage information, and example words or phrases in Cocopah and English. Some entries (both full-word and stem) include a cross reference for related words.

Entries are organized alphabetically by English in the English–Cocopa section of the dictionary. Entries include the English headword and the Cocopah translation(s). No other information is included within these entries.

The Introduction includes a brief Grammatical Synopsis, which includes information about Cocopah language structure, word classes, and affix forms.

This dictionary is the second volume of a three-part language resource for Cocopah by James M. Crawford. The first volume is Cocopa Texts (1983) and the third volume is Cocopa Grammar (never published; however, the author's notes are available through the American Philosophical Society Library).
