Where is Information Coming from

Information in this dictionary comes from the data collected by Floyd Lounsbury from 1939–40 for his master's thesis, during which over 800 texts were collected from over a dozen Oneida speakers, and Abbott's research on the Oneida language throughout the 1970s and 80s.

How are Entries Organised

Roots and stems of verbs are listed alphabetically by Oneida according to their initial segment. Nouns are listed alphabetically by Oneida as whole words. Verb roots that always occur with an incorporated noun or derivational morpheme are listed under the noun root.

Each entry includes the verb root/stem or the full noun, the designation (e.g., verb, noun, pref., etc.), an Oneida gloss, the entry's composition (for complex entries), inflected forms of the headword, and an English gloss. Each entry also includes the designation of 'ok' (meaning there is general agreement amongst speakers), '?' (meaning speakers disagree), or 'i' (meaning there is consensus but the entry is incomplete) indicating speaker consensus or lack thereof for the entry.
