This dictionary does not indicate where information is coming from or what sources were used. It is possible that information included comes from 2013 English-Innu Dictionary and Innu-English Dictionary by Marguerite MacKenzie and José Mailhot and the 2013 Dictionnaire innu-français and Dictionnaire français-innu by Marie-Odile Junker and Marguerite MacKenzie.

Tools and Framework used

This is an online, multimedia website. It shares an open source digital infrastructure with the other dictionary in the Algonquian Dictionaries and Language Resources Project.

The dictionary is also available as an app from the Apple App Store. It is only available for iOS.

This dictionary is open access.

The app is free, but is only designed for iOS devices.

Included Languages and Directionality

The dictionary and the website interface are available in English or French. The dictionary can be searched by Innu, English, or French.

Dialects Included

Dialect information is specified in each entry. The Innu Language Project website includes material from both the Western (Mashteuiatsh, Pessamit, Matimekush, Uashat mak Mani-utenam) and Eastern (Ekuanitshit, Nutashkuan, Unaman-shipit, Pakua-shipit, Sheshatshiu, Natuashish) dialects.

Type of Dictionary

This is a trilingual, online dictionary with some multimedia elements.

How are Entries Organised

Entries are organized alphabetically by selected language (Innu, English, or French). The search feature works for all included languages.

Entires include a headword, in either English, French, or Innu, followed by a definition, part of speech, grammatical information, community pronunciations, example sentences, and keywords. Additional information is nested within the entries.

Other Notes

This dictionary includes over 27,000 Innu words. The dictionary, and the entire website interface is available in English or French.

Entries in the dictionary can be slow to load, and the dictionary may freeze when trying to access nested entry information.
