A list of the many sources used to compile this vocabulary are cited in the Bibliography and the Introduction. Acronyms used to refer to specific printed and non-printed sources are listed in the Introduction, and are used in entries. A description of the speakers that both authors worked with is included in the Introduction. Entries which come from work by Olmsted are marked by DLO, while work by Bright is marked with the individual speaker's initials. No initials were used when the word was pronounced in the same form by Sargent Sambo and Clara Wicks.

Entries in this vocabulary list use various notational methods. Entries which come from manuscript materials by C. Hart Merriam use Merriam's notational system, entries from Olmsted are in non-phonemic notation, and entries from Bright marked by a single proceeding diagonal slash are in a tentative phonemic writing.
