Dialects Included
This dictionary is of the Samish (SI,NÁMEŚ) dialect. Descriptions of the language backgrounds of specific speakers’ are included in the Preface.
Occasionally, information that may be Cowichan or Halkomelem has been included because, as it is noted in the Preface, the speakers sometimes had difficulty remembering which language/dialect they knew the word in. The author has marked in parentheses in individual entries where information is not Samish.
Type of Dictionary
This is a bilingual, mono-directional topical wordlist, introduced by a thorough grammar and followed by a Samish story.
How are Entries Organised
Entries are organised topically and are each numbered. The topics are Numerals, Nature, Fauna, Flora, Body, Human Relations, Spirit, Entertainment, Man-made Things, Qualities, and Verbs. Nominals are listed by semantic domains and verbs are listed in alphabetic order by English gloss.
Entries include and English headword, followed by the Samish translation. Some entries also include speaker initials and/or notes on borrowing and related words in other languages.
The grammar includes information on phonemics, morphophonemics, and morphology of Samish. The English translation of the story is included, and is followed by the Samish version.
This wordlist follows the classified wordlist developed by Aert Kuipers and Randy Bouchard for languages of the Pacific Northwest.
