Where is Information Coming from

This dictionary began as a manuscript compiled by linguist Philip LeSourd in the 1970s containing about 3,000 words. It was later expanded by David A. Francis and Robert M. Leavitt with the assistance and support of LeSourd and many Passamaquoddy speakers. Additional information comes from previous works and documentation including Kolusuwakonol (1984), an early version of this dictionary, and Tales from Maliseet Country (1963) by Karl V. Teeter.

How are Entries Organised

Entries in this dictionary are organised alphabetically. In the Peskotomuhkati Wolastoqewi Latowewakon, entries are organised alphabetically by Passamaquoddy-Maliseet headword. Each entry contains the part of speech, the English gloss, inflected forms, and example sentences written first in Passamaquoddy-Maliseet and then in English. Speaker initials are given after sentences. Noun and verb entries are numbered in accordance with their table number in the Eli-Acehtasik Kolusuwakonol section. This section contains noun form and verb conjugation tables, numbered for reader convenience. The final section, Ikolisomanatuwewakon, is organised alphabetically by English headword in bold. Below, all related Passamaquoddy-Maliseet words are listed as sub-entries with their English glosses. No other information is included in these entries.
