How to Implement Jigsaw Discussion?

  1. Students are divided into about four to six "expert" groups.
  2. Members in each individual expert group will research, examine, and become familiar of an assigned topic; they are now the experts.
  3. Groups are then rearranged so that each new group, the "jigsaw" group, will have members from all expert groups.
  4. All "experts" are now responsible to teach the topic they are responsible of to everyone in the jigsaw group.

Why Use Jigsaw?

  1. Jigsaw encourages listening, engagement, interaction and peer teaching by giving each member of the group an essential part to play in learning.
  2. Students learn to develop teamwork and corporate learning skills.
  3. Students must be actively engaged and explain what they have learned to their peers.
  4. Both individual and group accountability are built into the process.
