Documentation:EHealth Strategy Office/Project Documentation/HWIP/Pedometer Overview

From UBC Wiki

Hi everyone, as you know, the HWIP grant has given us funds to do three things over the next year: a pedometer challenge, a group cooking lesson, and yoga classes.

The first initiative we're rolling out is the pedometer challenge. We had some discussions about the best way to encourage participation in the program, and to provide motivation without explicit competition because we, like any office, have people with all levels of fitness ability involved.

If you want to learn how to set up your pedometer, see Pedometer Software

Overview

We decided instead of providing only prizes to the top "steppers" (those who track the most steps throughout the program), the main thrust of the challenge will be a collective goal that we will work together to achieve. In order to set a reasonable goal, we’re going to conduct the challenge in two phases:

Phase 1

“What can we do?”: a short baseline and testing period, designed to get everyone walking and famailiar with the software.

  • Dates: Monday, June 27 - Sunday, July 3

To start the program and get everyone set up, we’ll do about a week's worth of walking to establish a baseline of how much we walk. During this time, you will get signed up for the tracking software and start to establish habits of tracking your walking. At the end of this brief 1-week period, we will examine the stats, and use that data to set the goal for Phase 2.

Phase 2

“The main event”: the prize round.

  • Dates: Tuesday, September 6 - Monday, November 7

Using the baseline data gathered in Phase 1, we will establish a goal amount of steps to hit in two months. If we reach that goal as an office, everyone will be rewarded with a gift card to a select location (Mountain Equipment Co-op, Running Room, Whole Foods, etc.). The list of available cards will be provided to you in due time. NB: The top five "steppers" will get a small increase in the amount of their gift card as an extra incentive.

Research

The research portion of the HWIP pedometer challenge will feature a pre- and post-survey as well as a daily reflection survey that we would like you to fill out as often as possible. The link to this survey is here.

In order to get you to log your daily reflection, we are going to send out an Outlook reminder that will recur on a daily basis with a link to the survey. Alternatively, we encourage you to add the survey form to your browser home page, so you will see it every time you log into IE or Firefox. To set your home page, go into your Preferences (in IE, on the right side of your toolbar go to Tools --> Internet Options...; in Firefox, go to Tools --> Options...) and paste in this link: http://www.fluidsurveys.com/...

You are also encouraged to reflect on your experience in the HWIP program using the eHealth website, and the option to record video reflection using the Knowledge Studio will also be presented to you over email.

Prize Structure

We have established a small goal for Phase 1, based on the StatsCan average steps per day.

Phase 2 is the real goal setting period. For this phase, we will establish two goal thresholds. The lower goal will be more attainable, but with a lower prize. The higher goal will provide more reward. The top 5 "steppers" during Phase 2 will get a bonus prize.

Additionally, we will have individual incentives that you can earn as you log more steps throughout the summer.

"Low" Goal

  • Number of steps to achieve: 7 million steps
  • Regular prize: $10 gift card
  • "Top 5" prize: $20 gift card

"High" Goal

  • Number of steps to achieve: 9.65 million steps
  • Regular prize: $15
  • "Top 5" prize: $25
