Course talk:PSYC305/2013ST2/ClassProject/0 Questionnaire
Use this page to develop the questionnaire. Remember we will need response scales as well as questions. If each student contributed one question on average, that would give us a questionnaire of appropriate length.

Hi all, I've made a Google form for people to complete the final questionnaire online. To complete it, you can go here https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1mxZ1XnXKftGkhrlL2zknFmHutCpLSbnpp05LnNj2nAg/viewform
I was hoping to make it so that people could go to a Google spreadsheet to see the responses. (I get an error saying "failed to change the response destination" when I try and create a Google spreadsheet for it to go to. If anyone is tech-savy and thinks they might be able to figure it out you can go here https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1mxZ1XnXKftGkhrlL2zknFmHutCpLSbnpp05LnNj2nAg/edit?usp=sharing to try).
Remember you don't have to respond to each question if you're not comfortable and there is no identifying data making your response anonymous.
Thanks, Jaimie
I noticed that it takes a while to complete the entire questionnaire. Can we do it in more than one sitting? Also, there is a few repeated items in question one. I'm not sure if it needs any concern.
Yes, it took me about 45 minutes to complete it myself. I don't think we can do it in more than one sitting. If anyone knows differently let us know! Yes it's a pity about the repeated questions, but it shouldn't matter.
Which demographic questions do you think we should include in the final questionnaire?
Should we add some questiones on religion? I personally believe religious beliefs will shape our personality, no matter to male or female. For example, on the dimension of aggression, those who believe in Daoism, as the core idea, they value peace, harmony a lot, which may result in an average of lower level on aggression.
I think religion is a valid contribution; I'm not sure whether religion shapes our personalities or people with certain personalities are more likely to follow certain religions, but I'm sure there's some sort of correlation.
However, I do think "irreligious/atheistic" should be separated into the categories of "agnostic" and "atheistic", because I believe the two can be very very different.
I'm not sure if we need level of education as a demographic question. It will just be students in the class filling out the questionnaire, meaning you will mostly be at the same level of education. What do others think?
Yeah, I made a mistake. I thought we may assign this questionnaire to a wide range of participants. If it is only for students in the class, we can remove this one.
Hi Jaimie, how about one's birth order or siblings? (For instance, a male who is the youngest brother in his family and all he has are sisters)
I think we should add questions about sexual orientation, because people sometimes with different sexual orientations have differing opinions. I studied this in one of my other psych classes.
Also, do you guys think we should ask something about attachment styles? How people were brought up in childhood? That also affects how our personality develops later in life.
I personally think that adding a question about sexual orientation might show a difference with the final results so we should include it, as long as it is completely anonymous I don't think anyone will mind.
Hi all, these are good questions. I don't feel strongly either way about whether we include them. I think we will leave it up to the class. What do others think?
Hi all, I think we have enough questions for the questionnaire.
I think the focus for the last few days should be to just add more to the first three questions (hobby, occupation, and activity preferences) and tidy up the questions that we have: - do all the questions have (appropriate) response scales? - are there any duplicate questions, or questions that are asking very similar things that could be combined into one? - can any of the questions be improved in any other ways?
Jaimie
Question 40 41 100 are very similar to each other, i think we can combine them
I'm kind of wondering about question 12... while I believe it will differentiate between males/females I think it would mostly be due to biological differences instead of personality differences, which is the actual construct we're trying to measure... ie. I think men would have more anxiety just because they lose hair far more often, not because there's any inherent difference in their personality...
I noticed that other than first three questions, most other questions are kind of random and disorganized. I am wondering how we will eventually design the questionnaire? For example, do we treat each question as an individual question and answer them all? Or are we going to combine/eliminate a lot of the remaining questions?
Hi all, it's great to see so many varied items on here, and even some infrequency scales - good thinking.
Those of you who have read articles on Gender Diagnosticity will know that the items that differentiate men and women best are occupation, hobby, and activity preferences.
I've tried to tidy up the questions a bit by organising them into occupation, hobby, and activity preferences (where relevant) at the start, and giving them the same response scale to make it easier for participants. I hope you like the changes. Feel free to comment if you don't agree.
It would be great if for the last few days that we are developing the survey that we could focus on developing these first three questions (adding more occupation, hobby, and activity preferences that you think will differentiate between men and women). Also if you have any suggestions to improve other people's questions, please do so if it's a minor change or feel free to use the discussion forum to check what other people think if it's a major change.
Also, as I mentioned in the lecture, we've had a few people drop the course, so if people want to contribute a few items, that will be fine.
We will put the final questionnaire up for people to complete probably on next Tuesday.
Keep up the good work, Jaimie
Use this page to develop the questionnaire. Remember we will need response scales as well as questions.
For an example of another class using UBC wiki to develop a survey, click here.
Just wondering where we are displaying the response scales, or if we are including them later?
Hi Amy, Yes, I would suggest displaying the response options in here. Cheers, Jaimie
Hi all, it's great to see some good questions proposed on here. I'd suggest with response options, giving people at least five response options. That gives more sensitivity with which to distinguish groups. Jaimie
Hi all, I've started things off on here with the first proposed question. I hope you like it.
From what I've seen in the readings, it seems that questions asking about occupation, hobby, and activity preferences seem to be the best at distinguishing between genders. I think these are probably the questions that we should use. If you have other suggestions, though, I'd be happy to hear them.
Jaimie
