Classes

Lectures will be held from 3:30 to 5:00p.m. (1530h to 1700h) in the Buchanon Building, room A104

Grading Policies

  • 50% Final Exam
  • 30% Midterm Exams (15% each. February 7 & March 16 tentatively)
  • 5% Assignments
  • 10% Weekly Quizzes
  • 5% Labs

A passing mark for the course is 50%. Additionally, a minimum of 41% is required on the final exam for a passing grade. All sections of Math 103 will write a common midterm at a common date and time. There are no make-up midterms but if you miss a midterm for a legitimate reason (e.g. illness, with a doctor's note), allowances will be made. Calculators are not allowed for the midterms or final exam. Labs, assignments, and quizzes must be handed in to the instructor. All marks are subject to scaling; this ensures fairness of the final grades across all sections.

Office Hours

Office hours will be held every Monday and Tuesday (except on UBC Holidays). Hours will be held in the auditorium annex (AUDX, Northeast corner of the first floor). If you cannot come to office hours, you can still try to find me online for help, or send me an email to set up an alternate appointment.

  • Monday - 11:30a.m. to 1:00p.m.
  • Tuesday - 1:00p.m. to 2:30p.m.

Course Text

The text for this course will be the typed notes by Dr. Leah Keshet. They can be found here. Readings from this text (and possibly other sources) will be required throughout the term. Check the class schedule on the Materials page or the Course Calendar for a detailed list of reading assignments throughout the term. Refer to these pages often for updates, additions, or corrections.

Assignments

Assignments will be due roughly every two weeks on Tuesdays by 5pm. Check the calendar or the assignments page for the exact dates. There are 6 assignments over the course of the term. Each assignment is worth 1% of your final grade, and your lowest assignment mark will not count. Grades will be influenced by correctness and clarity of your solutions.

Quizzes

Short quizzes will be conducted at the beginning of Tuesday's class every week, starting January 11, 2011. The material for the quizzes will be based on the readings for the previous week and wiki content. Each quiz will be worth 1% of your final grade, and the lowest two quizzes will be dropped from your score.

Labs

For a description of the labs see the lab page. There are 6 labs over the course of the term. Each lab is worth 1% of your final grade, and your lowest lab mark will not count. Labs are due roughly every two weeks on Fridays by 3pm. You must be registered in a lab section as well as the lecture section. If you have trouble getting into a lab section, come to the Math Department registration sessions. You are responsible for completing six computer labs (see the lab page for more information. You can do the labs at home or in Leonard S. Klinck (LSK), Room 121 at any time). If you are unfamiliar with the labs or do not have an account, you should visit the labs in the second week of classes (first week of labs). Your MATH 102 account from last term will probably still work but try it to make sure. Be sure to put your full name, student number, section number (the lecture section number, 207. Not the lab section number) and the number of the problem that you did, at the top right of the page you hand in.
