Project Description

Context: What challenge or issue does the project aim to address?

We would like a UBC group to research the first peoples of Richmond. Richmond major industry is farming and has some of the best agricultural land in the lower mainland, termed the ‘Garden City’. Before settlers, the lands were used by Indigneous people for thousands of years. This rich and important history is what we are interested in learning more about to incorporate into our resources and teaching. As Richmond becomes more urbanized and we push our ecosystem further out of balance, Indingeous knowledge must be integrated into our future policies and plans to protect wildlife and biodiversity.

Main Project Activities

  • Researching information on Richmond through archives, government data.
  • Connecting with Indigenous groups and other relevant community organizations.

Expected Project Deliverable(s)

1 Research paper

1 Infographic

Intended Project Outcome

As a society, we will have a better understanding of the history of the land on which we work. We will then be able to plan on how to better incorporate, share, and respect Indigenous knowledge into our programs, and society's mission.
