Project Description
Context: What challenge or issue does the project aim to address?
Many of our students face food insecurity for a number of different reasons. This insecurities have increased significantly since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. We have already managed to secure a number of ways for students and their families to access food resouces both at school and in the community (i.e. hamper programs, food banks, reclaimed food, etc...). However, while our students have increased their access to food, we recognize it would be helpful for them to have recipes they can use at home. We currently have a Foods class where students are developing their basic cooking skills at home, but we lack the resources/time to provide them with easy recipes they could use at home with food from food banks and other food programs. This project aims to increase our students ability to make healthy meals at home, as well as further develop cooking skills and knowledge about nutrition they can use when living on their own. One practice that wouldplay a significant role in this program is Food Safe.
Main Project Activities
- Researching items commonly found at food banks and in hamper programs
- Researching recipes that can be made from these items
- Researching the impact having access to healthy meals has on learning/school
Expected Project Deliverable(s)
Creating a 1 recipe book with meals that focus on nutrition, while also emphasizing quick, easy meals which can be created from items typically found in hampers and at the food bank.
