CONS200 Case Study - Copyright Issues

Hi Aza:

I hope this message finds you well.

My name is Deb and I am the Open Case Studies Project Assistant. I have edited all of the student cases from CONS200; replacing when possible, or removing, images that do not fulfill requirements of "open" in order to prevent copyright infringement.

I was in the process of importing these student cases to our main Open Case Studies website, when I noticed that you have added the Wild salmon run, Sooke River, October 2017 image by Hillary Clark without any indications that it was used with permission from appropriate copyright holders.

Dr. Bulkan mentioned that all CONS200 students were aware of the copyrights considerations when creating a wiki page and of the possibility that their pages may be edited. I'm wondering whether you would please obtain written permission from Hillary Clark or ask her to place a creative commons license for this image on the wiki page, seeing that she is one of your group members?

Please let me know, as we would otherwise not be able to showcase your (and your colleagues') work unless it does not infringe any copyrights.

Thank you, Deb

Hi Deb, So sorry about that, we had no idea! We were under the understanding that if we used our own pictures it was not copyright so I guess that's wrong? Did we upload it to the page incorrectly? How do we create a creative commons licence for the picture since we really want to use that picture considering one of our own group members took it! I have written permission from Hillary Clark, and have tried to attach it to this message. If it didn't work I can send it another way that is convenient for you. Could you tell me if what I've attached is good enough to use the picture? Sorry for all the mess, but thank you for your help!<wikieditor-toolbar-tool-file-pre>31870896_2159998947557207_5827063137861369856_n.jpg]] Aza Fynley Kuijt

Hi Aza:

Thank you for getting back to me! As a student at UBC, you own the copyright for all the work that you produce. In order for others to use and share your work, they must obtain written permission from you unless you have licensed your work under a Creative Commons license. I hope this help to clarify your understanding about copyright. My colleague Rie Namba will be editing the Wiki metadata on Hillary Clark's photo to reflect that the image is used with permission. I will go ahead to import and showcase your case study on the Open Case Studies website (http://cases.open.ubc.ca).

Take care, Deb
