Facilitation Basics Workshop

The Facilitation Basics Workshop is a workshop being proposed as an offering by Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology to train TAs within departments to facilitate the training of their own TAs. The workshop would provide them with additional training on how to deliver a TA training workshop for their department, developing some basic facilitation skills.

Objectives

Objectives for the proposed workshop include the follwing:

  • Will be able to distinguish between facilitating and instructing
  • Will identify and use several facilitation strategies and techniques
  • Will be able to plan facilitated sessions on general topics in teaching and learning for TAs
  • (Theoretical background – how much of this? In working on it with facilitators?)
  • Getting people comfortable with peer-based learning and learning how to facilitate it.
  • (Activity – appreciation of how much your own experience/knowledge as TAs to integrate into a session)

Potential Follow-Up

Follow-up (support) for the TAs who have taken the TA Facilitation Basics – join the community (CoP)! Refresher meetings for those who have been through in the past, etc.

TA Training coordinator would still be working with departments and people who go through the training to then do a needs assessment and LOs, etc. = this is a replacement for facilitators from CTLT – we are training TA facilitators for departmental sessions = outcome.

Next Actions

Develop a proposal to share with departments.

Proposal Draft

The Proposal Draft will be written below. This will be sent to departments to gauge interest in sending TAs through the program. The response to this will be reported back when we propose this to CTLT management.
