Hi! My name is Brenda Mao and I am in my last year at UBC studying Biology and Oceanography taking EOSC 270 during this winter term.

I am originally from Edmonton, Alberta but moved to Vancouver in 2016. Recently my family moved over to Seattle for my dad’s job so it was my first time visiting them in America during Christmas break!

Currently, I work part time at the UBC Centre for Student Involvement & Careers in the Employer and Alumni Engagement portfolio as a student events assistant. Even though my major is unrelated, I’m hoping to work more in student affairs after I graduate!

Despite my career aspirations, I still enjoy learning about marine biology and chemical oceanography— more specifically about the biogeochemical cycling of trace metals (other than iron) as well as the chemical speciation of major ions to understand their bioavailability and cascading effects up the trophic levels in the food web.
