Hi, my name is Angus McWhirter. I'm 18 years of age and this is my first year at UBC and in the Faculty of Arts, looking to hopefully major in economics. I am from Sydney Australia, and as a result have a strong passion for rugby.

The Pythagorean Theorem

The The Pythagorean Theorem presents a relation between the three sides of a right angle triangle, stating that "In any right triangle, the area of the square whose side is the hypotenuse (the side opposite the right angle) is equal to the sum of the areas of the squares whose sides are the two legs (the two sides that meet at a right angle)."* Such a theory is commonly portrayed in the following equation, in which x is the length of the given triangle's hypotenus, and b and c illustrate the length of the remaining two sides, . The theorem, named after greek mathematician Pythagoras, is often proved through the use of the following diagram displayed in this link, http://tinyurl.com/2f5vkrq*. Both the formula and theory demonstrate that Pythagorean Theorem is a statement of area and length, thus it can be said that Pythagoras' Theorem "...stands with one foot in geometry and the other in algebra", evident in the workings of La Géométrie by Descartes*. It is argued that the theorem itself predates the very person it was named after.
