Themes

As far as the two themes posted so far, I'd much prefer the border crossing one. I don't know if that kind of topic is done to death in KidsLit circles, but I think it lends itself to more interesting explorations of the future than just talking about how childhood's been constructed.

I'm not just saying this because I suggested the topic, but I think the ideas from Rachel's topic suggestion would fit into the idea of border crossing (crossing to darker subjects and territories.) Also, I have a bit of a "thing" against the term "Problem Novel" because of the connotation that the books are only discussing "problems" as opposed to simply addressing topics of interest or necessity in the lives of children and youth. I'm not discounting the theme! I just think that if we go with it, we need to think about changing the wording.
