Group Work

Hi everyone!

I'm Henry. I was hoping to discuss with everyone in my group about how we should be dividing up the tasks and if anyone has a particular preference for a part of the project. Would everyone like to divide it up based on questions or would everyone like to divide it up based on what Dr. Kelly suggested in terms of information assimilator, references, graphical designer, leader, etc. It would also be great if we could decide on a format in which we would like to present the information with. I'm thinking Prezi or PowerPoint would be good. If PowerPoint is good for everyone, we can start with Google Slides so everyone can see everything updated live. I think it would also be good to decide on a timeline for this project. Tentatively I think the following sounds good:

Monday (18th)- Finish reading each other's submissions for the individual portion and finalizing tasks and format. Tuesday (19th)- Start a document where we can have all information we deem to be pertinent in one place. Wednesday (20th)- Start working on the slides Thursday (21st)- Finalize the slides Friday (22nd)- Buffer day Saturday (23rd)- Submit!

Thanks for taking the time to read this!

Henry

Hey Henry,

Thanks for taking the time to make the first post. I definitely agree with your idea. I think a power point is the best way to go and I think we should divide it equally into three sections, so that each of us makes an equal number of slides. Also, I think we should try to get this done a little bit before Saturday, so we can read all the sections and make sure we agree on all the points. I was also thinking we can make a final summary chart which lists the similarities and differences between the two types of bacteria in regards to the 4 steps/questions mentioned in the case. What do you both think about this?

If you both want to post your email address, I can get a google slide presentation started and send it to you.

Hasrit

HasritSidhu (talk)22:56, 18 January 2016

Hello Hasrit,

Thanks for the reply! That sounds like a great idea. I have already started a Google Slides document and the link is here: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1l0CYPkPj2Grpa9Pu2F0iqbr4EV1YAFufM4Eb95sF6ek/edit?usp=sharing (I was originally going to submit a PowerPoint presentation for the individual assignment but decided against that. I just uploaded that into the Google Slides so we might have something to work off of. Probably not entirely correct or great but if you guys would like to start from scratch, I'm totally fine with that too!:))

Yeah I completely agree that we should get it done a little bit before Saturday, that's why I left Friday as a buffer! I also think a summary slide would be perfect considering the fact that we are to compare and contrast. Also sorry, I did not see your reply that's why I messaged over Connect. I think communicating over this should be good unless you guys prefer something else.

Henry

YiChinLu (talk)23:52, 18 January 2016

Yeah, I think this is great as well. I think it would work well to work off the presentation that you have already started. How should we split up the work. Everyone gets one question and we split the last question 3 ways?

HasritSidhu (talk)03:37, 19 January 2016

Hey everyone, Sorry for the delayed reply, I don't know why these messages did not show up for me until now.. Are we going to be making a summary chart?

Joey

ZhuangYiFu (talk)04:31, 19 January 2016

No problem, Joey. We are thinking of doing both- PowerPoint slides and a summary chart. Sounds good, Hasrit. I took care of most of question 1 I believe so that can be the one we split up. We just need to refine it. Would you like to take Question 2, Hasrit? I can take question 3 and are you okay with Question 4, Joey? Let's get our questions done by Wednesday at say 10PM? I think it'd be good if we are continuously updating our references. As you can see I was just posting links but I have the citations for most of those entries so it should be no problem.

Let me know what you guys think,

Henry

YiChinLu (talk)05:37, 19 January 2016

Sounds great, I will work on question 2. Yea, we should definitely continue to update the reference list as we progress through our slides. I guess in making our slides, we should be referencing and taking things from everyone's report. Also, we can reference new studies/material to fill in any gaps.

HasritSidhu (talk)15:44, 19 January 2016

Sounds good, I'll be doing question 4. I'm hosting the Science Pit Night event tmr until 12am so i might be a bit late

ZhuangYiFu (talk)05:54, 20 January 2016

Hey everyone, Sorry for posting my response to the question a couple days late as I got really sick and wasn't able to get enough work done as I had hoped so I had to get an extension from the instructor. I can take over the last question that one of you guys hasn't already taken. Let me know which question that would be. Also, sorry for not posting here earlier and keeping you informed. I wasn't sure where we were supposed to communicate.

HarshvirMatharu (talk)07:08, 20 January 2016

Hey Harshvir,

I believe all the questions are covered now. I think Henry had finished most of the slides for question 1, so there isn't much left with that. We were thinking of making a summary slide with a compare and contrast chart for all of the different questions for the two bacteria. Would you like to complete this portion of the presentation?

Hasrit

HasritSidhu (talk)15:42, 20 January 2016

Hey everyone,

Welcome to our group, Harshvir. I also think it would be good if you start with the compare and contrast chart. If you have some extra time, it would be great if you could finish up my slides for question 1. I was a bit preoccupied, but I think having our slides done by 12AM tonight would be a better time.

Henry

YiChinLu (talk)20:28, 20 January 2016

Hey, Yea I can do the summary slide with the compare and contrast chart and finish up the 1st question. I have been studying for a quiz that I have tomorrow so I won't be able to finish by 12am today but I'll get it done by tomorrow for sure.

Harsh

HarshvirMatharu (talk)03:36, 21 January 2016

No problem, Harsh. Ideally tomorrow will be a day of just refining everything. We should look at each other's slides to make sure we are in agreement as to what to include in terms of details. I seem to have finished my slides...and I ended up with only 4 slides... I was looking at your submissions and I think I covered the same general idea but I don't know if I should go more into detail. Please let me know your thoughts!

Henry

YiChinLu (talk)03:51, 21 January 2016

I should be done my slides today as well. Should we reference using APA or should we use a numbered system?

HasritSidhu (talk)15:41, 21 January 2016

Hey Everyone,

I just finished my slides, so please take a look over them whenever you have a chance and let me know if you have any suggestions for improving them. Henry, I looked over your slides and they look really good! The only thing I would suggest is adding a discussion on the molecular and cellular determinants of whether each bacteria induces an extracellular or intracellular infection. For example, S. aureus requires some form of trauma and specific attachment to induce an intracellular infection; whereas, S. pyogenes induces an intracellular infection to utilize trafficking mechanisms to other parts of the body. Let me know what you think about this.

Also, Joey and Harsh, when were you thinking of finishing your slides and the compare/contrast chart by? Just post a quick message whenever you are done, so we can do a final read through, make edits and finish referencing it!

Hasrit

HasritSidhu (talk)01:08, 22 January 2016

Give me about an hour and I'll be done!

ZhuangYiFu (talk)03:52, 22 January 2016

Sounds good Hasrit. I was working the whole day, didn't have a chance to work on the slides much. I'll do it as soon as I'm home. Thanks for taking the time to look over them! I think we're in good shape guys!

Henry

YiChinLu (talk)07:38, 22 January 2016

Sorry for the delay, I uploaded my section but I'm not done uploading my references. Since my section is the last...should I upload my references after the other sections have been done? I'm just afraid it wont be in order and it might confused people.

By the way, SciWeek EXO VANIC is tmr at 8pm, so I won't be able to do anything after that time. I'll be free the entire day to work on this before that though, so let me know if you guys want me to do anything!

Once again, sorry for the delayed upload of slides. SciWeek is quite hectic haha

ZhuangYiFu (talk)07:58, 22 January 2016

It would be great if you could add some pictures/figures to your slides.

YiChinLu (talk)10:59, 22 January 2016

Yea, I agree. The slides look, but maybe just try adding a few pictures to help students understand concepts. I think once Harsh is able to upload the slides for the first part and reference them, I can reference mine and then Henry and finally Joey, you can reference yours. This way, we can ensure that everything is in order (if we are doing the numbered format of referencing). If we are doing just normal APA, then we can reference whenever. Harsh, can we get an update on when your slides will be uploaded?

Hasrit

HasritSidhu (talk)19:54, 22 January 2016

I just have the last sub-question left and will be done within an hour or so. For the summary slide, I was planning on waiting until we were all finished so I would be able to gather all the info. I will start on the summary slide today and finish summarizing all the info currently in the slides by the end of today. Also, can you guys do a read through of the first question and let me know what you think I should add or if it is good as is.

Harsh

HarshvirMatharu (talk)02:11, 23 January 2016

Hi Harsh,

I feel like there might be a bit too much text in some of your slides. If you could cut them down and make them more abridged and in point form that would be great! Thank you!

Hasrit, I think we should go through all the slides tonight and make sure everything is consistent in terms of citations (like you said) and in terms of stuff like the order in which a bacteria is introduced in the slides. Let's get this done tonight guys!

Henry

YiChinLu (talk)03:28, 23 January 2016

Hi Harsh,

I think everyone's slides are completed (the information at least), so you can start the summary slide whenever you are ready. Have you gotten started on the chart yet (or is that what you mean by the summary slides)? I agree with Henry that your slides and information look good, maybe just try cutting some of the information down to make the presentation look cleaner.

I am going to cite all of my slides now and will just add the references to the references section. We can organize the references tomorrow when everyone has completed theirs. We should also go through all the slides and make everything consistent as Henry pointed out. This includes making the structure (bullet points, order of things, references and images) consistent with each other.

Great work everyone, we are almost done!

HasritSidhu (talk)04:55, 23 January 2016

Hey, I have finished up the organization of the references up until the last question as they weren't listed yet and I will upload the summary slides mid-day tomorrow after a bit of editing. I also tried to make the slides as consistent in structure as I could in terms of the organization, font, color and such. Take a look and see if there is anymore editing to be done.

Harsh

HarshvirMatharu (talk)13:08, 23 January 2016

Hey Harsh,

Great job on the editing! It looks good. I guess we are still waiting on Joey to add some pictures and finish his referencing. I will try to add some pictures in for him. Hopefully we can get this finalized soon.

HasritSidhu (talk)18:07, 23 January 2016

Hey Guys,

I just went through the slides again and made everything consistent. I added two pictures to joey's slides. Joey, some of your slides don't quite make sense, so maybe try expanding on a few of the points. I'll make a note of them in each slide that I had trouble with. Also, try to organize the slides a little bit better because they don't quite flow well.

HasritSidhu (talk)19:21, 23 January 2016

Man great job Harsh! Slides look awesome! I also agree with Hasrit!

Henry

YiChinLu (talk)22:34, 23 January 2016

Hey guys,

I went through the slides again and made some minor changes including formatting and grammar (for the first three sections). I think everything looks really good for the first three sections. The last section needs some work as we still need to make some changes to content and reference. Joey are you going to be able to do this?! If not, can someone do this. I might not be able to as I won't be home until later tonight. I think once we are done that last section, we can submit it. Also, we just need to add in that final summarizing slide/chart, which I believe Harsh will add in soon. Great job, we are almost done!

HasritSidhu (talk)00:10, 24 January 2016

Yeah unfortunately I'm going to be working all day today until about 10:30PM tonight. So I may not have the chance to work on it.

YiChinLu (talk)00:31, 24 January 2016

I'm on it, sorry about that

ZhuangYiFu (talk)01:34, 24 January 2016

Great, thanks Joey. Once the referencing and the final few slides are fixed up and the final summary chart is posted, would someone be able to post the final presentation before 12? I don't think I'll be back before 12, so I probably won't be able to do it. Thanks in advance!

HasritSidhu (talk)01:41, 24 January 2016

Slides have been posted! Good work everyone!

ZhuangYiFu (talk)06:07, 24 January 2016

Good job guys!

HasritSidhu (talk)20:01, 24 January 2016
