Lacustrine material and varves
Is varving common in all lacustrine materials, or strictly glacio-lacustrine?
Thanks!
Varves (seasonal layering) are seen in glacio-lacustrine deposits as these lakes are frozen for long periods of the year allowing colloids (particularly dark organic colloids) to settle; leading to distinct light / dark seasonal layers
In contrast, annual layers are seen in lacustrine deposits.

So varve is the term used only to describe the alternating dark and light seasonal layers in glacio-lacustrine deposits? Some sources imply that the term applies generally to all annual layers.

Kara, we are using varves specific to glacio-lacustrine deposits (i.e. seasonal layering) and annual layers for lacustrine deposits.
