Because ammonium is a weak acid and it is converted to nitrate through nitrification, I am assuming soil pH will increase since there will be less of the acid present. Is this right? If not, what is the correct answer?
Nitrification, which is oxidation of ammonium to nitrite (NO2) and then oxidation of nitrite to nitrates (NO3), releases H ions into soil solution, which in turn lowers soil pH.
