Were students explicitly taught this "make the base 1/2" method? Does anyone know? It seems like it would be much simpler, especially in solution 2, to take an ln of both sides. Should that be added as a third solution?

This is taught in high school - or at least it was for me back in the day.

So I'd expect they have seen this before.

Since solution 2 doesn't rely on this trick as heavily any more, I think it's okay as is now.
