Learning Commons:Student Orientation/Streeters

From UBC Wiki

What are Streeters?

Streeters are an effective way to generate multiple perspectives on a question, issue or topic by asking the same question to a variety of people. One the Learning Commons website, streeters are used to supplement blog posts or learning toolkits.

The key to a good streeter is a good question. Here are a few tips (inspired by Alan Levine - UDGAgora:

  • make sure it is open-ended, requiring more than a "yes-no" response.
  • frame it well so it can be answered quickly.
  • find a question that has universal appeal or that students would know something about or have an opinion on.

In the case of the Learning Commons:

  • ensure that the question pertains to learning or the student experience.

Resources

  • You Can Do Man on the Street Videos Like the Pros: Watchdog Wire - supporting citizen journalism
  • Story Boards: while storyboards are not as important for streeter style videos as they are for others, they may be quite helpful to you in sketching out your ideas related to location and even the variety and range of responses you are looking for - which can help with editing decisions in post production.
