Students (undergraduate and graduate students) are advised to use the @student.ubc.ca email service. This account will continue to be active even after the student has graduated from their degree program. This account also provides access to an Office 365 subscription while the student has an active status.
Networking
Computers in the labs will be connected to the building's wired network. Windows computers will be joined to the EAD domain, and students will access using their CWL credentials. The username will need .stu appended. It will look like CWL_ID.stu.
Remote access from off campus is possible via the LFS VPN https://lc.landfood.ubc.ca/connecting-to-the-lfs-vpn/ Access is limited to RDP or SSH.
As per the LFS IT policy, personal computers are not allowed on the LFS network. Users who bring and use their personal devices are advised to use the UBCSecure Wi-Fi network for connectivity.
Compute Resources
Aside from the computers provided by your supervisor, graduate students can obtain access to high performance compute through their supervisor's Compute Canada account.
Storage
All students with a student email account have 1TB of storage in their personal OneDrive.
Labs can request for a MS Team for their group or project. Each Team comes with 25TB of storage.
Additional storage options
- Chinook (Requests registration from the PI)
- Teamshare network storage (Charged per GB per year, it is affordable with a research grant)
Web Presence
Research labs can request for a web site on the UBC CMS. The LFS Comms team and the Learning Centre can assist with this set up and take photos of the lab members. Maintenance of the site and its content is the responsibility of the lab.
