Previous Print Accounting System

Pay for print has replaced the system described below, effective 2015-09-08.

How does it work?

The printers in the computer labs are attached to a print accounting system. To start off, each first time user is credited with $5.00, this credit happens only once.

Adding dollars to your print account

When your print balance has been exhausted, you will need to add dollars to your print account.

You can add dollars and view your print balance at this LFS Print Balance - add dollars. Login to the system uses CWL and the payment system will accept VISA, MasterCard and Debit cards.

An indication that you have insufficient balance is when you send the jobs and nothing prints. At this point, do not send the document repeatedly to the printer. You will only cause problems for other users. What you need to do is to login to the web store and add dollars.

How much does each page cost?

The cost per page is $0.10 whether printing to letter or legal sized paper.

What happens when you print

When you click ‘print’ in the program that you are running, the computer generates the print job and formats it in postscript. It is then sent off to the print queue.

At the queue, a pre processor reads the job and determines how many pages there are and checks that you have sufficient credit in your account. If you do, the job is released to the printer. Before the printing begins, the hardware counter on the printer is recorded.

After the print job has completed printing, the hardware counter is polled again, the difference of these 2 counter numbers is the number of pages that your account will be debited.

Therefore, if nothing printed from the printer, your account will not be debited.

If you did not have sufficient credit, the print job is deleted from the queue and will not be printed.

Checking the Print Queue

You can check the status of the print queue by visiting the website of the print queue.
