Project Description

Context: What challenge or issue does the project aim to address?

Context: What challenge or issue does the project aim to address? Food security during covid specifically for seniors and how to safely re-engage them in other programs and projects. We are serving 30-40 seniors weekly with a food bag and produce from the gardens, urban farmers and farmers market; meals for seniors delivered; and grocery gift cards. Seniors are a vulnerable population and we need to identify the gaps in food programs, and services. We want to increase our outreach to other seniors in the community who need extra supports at this time. This includes residents at LM Court, CityHeights, Modular Housing and participants in the seniors programs at the community centres in LMRP.

Main Project Activities

  1. Review LFS 350 Fall Final Report
  2. Create a survey
  3. Conduct the Survey to seniors - online, phone.
  4. Compile recipes for local harvested produce with culturally specific 'adaptations' of recipes for local produce that seniors want to learn
  5. Outreach to other seniors in the community to promote the seniors meals, Veggie Bags and food bank supports and gift cards

Expected Project Deliverable(s)

  • 1 survey developed to administer to seniors in the LMRP social housing complexes and in our programs currently (Zoom LineDancing and the Knitting Circle)
  • 1 Poster for distribution at the housing sites letting residents asking them to get in touch with us; complete survey
  • 1 Report analyzing the surveys and recommendations on how to safely re-engage seniors into programs; and what food programs/ veggies do they want
  • 1 literature and best practices review (created)
