Project Description

Context: What challenge or issue does the project aim to address?

Every year Farm to School hosts a Spring Celebration for schools participating in Farm to School grants. This year, as it will be virtual, we will open to entire school district. We will be offering "meal kit" to students/classroooms that feature one recipe that uses mostly local ingredients. We would like to "deconstruct" the recipe for students to open up discussion on "where do my food come from" and "who grows/produces my food". We would like to trace back each ingredient in the food and locate it within our local food system (farmer, forager, food producer...), as well as local food resources (farmers market, TRU culinary program, community garden). What we would like from students (requesting 2 groups, one for SD 73 and one for SD 83), is a visual infograph or food asset map of the recipe within the "kamloops" and "salmon Arm" context, that teachers could use alongside the recipe to think about food on a more systems level. "It takes a community to feed a child". We are planning to have one ingredient that can be foraged and one that can be grown in your windowsill.

Main Project Activities

1. Review of farmers markets, community gardens, food programs in region

2. Research "journey" of each ingredient in a selected recipe

3. Present information in infograph or visually appealing format that teachers could use in their classrooms to talk about the local food system.

Expected Project Deliverable(s)

1 visually appealing teaching resource that deconstructs a recipe and connects it within a local food context, as a means for teachers to talk about the food system and different ways to procure food (growing, foraging, purchasing). This will be distributed, along with mealkits, to schools. We hope to include professions related to the procurement of ingredients (farmers, forager, chefs,...), as well as local sources (community gardens, farmer's markets)

Intended Project Outcome

1. Students and teachers become more aware of local food system

2. Information is presented in a simple and visually appealing manner that teachers feel empowered to use in their classrooms
