Project Description

Context: What challenge or issue does the project aim to address?

Background of 4-H: 4-H is an international youth development organization with its roots in agriculture. There are over 7 million youth involved in 4-H in 70 countries worldwide. 4-H has a long history in B.C. helping youth become strong community leaders who are aware of agriculture and career opportunities in the agri-food sector. 4-H BC currently has 2200 youth members participating in around 135 community based 4-H clubs across the province. There are approximately 500 volunteers that run 4-H clubs at the community level.

Challenge: The 4-H program is dependent on volunteer leaders and has clubs that are mostly of a traditional club model (focused on livestock projects in rural areas).

We hope to explore 4-H after-school program models with potential to make 4-H and agriculture and food education accessible to more children and youth in B.C., especially those in urban and suburban communities.

Main Project Activities

  • Students will learn about 4-H BC history, structure, and operations through conversations with the community partner
  • Students will interview educators who are familiar with the 4-H program and identify key strategies that could make school based 4-H programming successful in B.C.
  • Students will research successful school-based 4-H program models from the U.S.A.

Expected Project Deliverable(s)

We would anticipate an options paper outlining 3 to 5 4-H after-school program models based on online research of successful programs in the U.S.A. The options paper should include for each option:

  • where the program is run
  • a description of the program activities and resources
  • ages of youth involved
  • who delivers the programming (teachers, volunteers, 4-H staff…etc.)
  • cost for youth to participate
  • pros and cons

Based on the information gained through interviews with educators, students should identify which option(s) they feel have the best chance of success in B.C. Students should include all raw data from interviews and refer to online research in their paper.

Intended Project Outcome

4-H BC has 3 to 5 options of after-school program models to consider and possibly implement to make 4-H accessible to more children and youth in B.C., especially those in urban and suburban communities.

Expected Outcomes

Learning Outcomes

I hope students will learn about...

  • Youth Development and agriculture education

I think students will come to appreciate...

  • The diversity of the 4-H program

Through this project, students will develop...

  • Creative thinking around how asset-based development can help more B.C. youth and communities benefit from 4-H through after-school programming

Organizational Outcomes

How does the student project contribute to your organization's mission and long-term vision?

  • 4-H BC is interested in providing service to more youth and communities around B.C. and in increasing the diversity of our membership. This project would be a helpful first step in considering options for improving youth participation through after-school 4-H programming.
