How to adjust WeBWorK homework length for a student
If you want to grant a student extended time to a particular homework assignment, you can change the assignment due date only for that student without affecting the rest of the class.
To extend the due date of a homework set for a student:
- In your WeBWorK course, click Classlist Editor.
- Find the student from the class list, and click on the number next to them under the Assigned Sets column.
- Find the assignment you want to extend, check the box next to Closes and enter the new due date. Make sure you use the correct date format. Note: WeBWorK will not allow you to set a due date later than the Answer date. If you need to change the Answer date, follow the instructions in the How to change the Answer date for entire class section.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page. Click Save changes.
- You can check that the due date for that particular assignment has been changed correctly for the student by clicking on Homework Sets on the left under the Main Menu. You will see the list of assignments and the corresponding due dates of those that are still open.
How to change the Answer date for entire class
- Click Hmwk Sets Editor.
- Click the pencil icon next to the name of the assignment you want to edit.
- In the Answer Date column, enter a new date. Make sure you use the correct date format.
- Click the button, Save Edit!.
Adjusting the Canvas assignment for a student's WeBWorK assignment
Access to WeBWorK problem sets is controlled by WeBWorK. Solely changing an assignment deadline on Canvas will not have an effect on the WeBWorK problem set. Even if you have locked a WeBWorK assignment in Canvas, students may still be able to access the problem set by entering the WeBWorK portal via an older assignment. Therefore, it is important to ensure the deadlines in WeBWorK are accurate.
If you make significant adjustments to a student's WeBWorK deadlines, their Canvas grade may be marked as "Late" when it is synced to Canvas. To avoid a "Late" tag, you will need to make a manual adjustment to the student's Canvas assignment as well. For example, if you are allowing a student to take an exam later in the evening due to time zone differences, you should adjust the Due date and Available Until times in the Canvas assignment accordingly.
Note: Late tags do not affect a student's recorded grade unless you have configured a late submission policy in your Canvas course.
Consult the Canvas Documentation on assigning custom Quiz deadlines to an individual student.
