The UBC Time Machine
Jennifer Moss, Adjunct Instructor in the Department of Creative Writing at UBC, brought the idea to create an immersive AR non-traditional tour of UBC's campus using short fiction pieces written by creative writing students. With the help of student-staff and student-volunteers, the goal of this project is to create a unique experience using digital media to convey the ideas of creative writing students through storytelling. In collaboration with David Gaertner of First Nations and Indigenous Studies and students in that program, the goal is to create work that reimagines the past and decolonizes the future. The project is currently under consideration by Musqueam.
Introduction
There are plenty of tours available of UBC's campus, but none utilize the powerful imagination and relevant commentary of UBC students. After downloading this mobile app, you will be prompted to walk to various points on campus. At each location, you will be given the choice to listen to a story that takes place either in the past or the future about that location. Effectively -- your cel phone becomes a time machine, travelling through time, and into alternate realities. By experiencing the telling of these stories, conventional ideas of the campus are re-imagined and challenged. There is an unlimited supply of creative fiction written by UBC students and this is a place for their work to be shared with students of all disciplines and others on campus.
Much of the content created by UBC about UBC ends up feeling like boosterism. This is a vehicle for authentic student creative expression, and concerted thought about the power of narrative fiction to influence the way we think about place, race, and identity.
