What Is Turnitin

UBC subscribes to the Turnitin Suite that includes a set of tools to improve the student writing cycle by preventing plagiarism and providing rich feedback to students.

The tools are:

  • Originality checking
  • Online grading
  • Peer review

Instructor and Student Accounts Setup Workflow

  1. An instructor contacts UBC Turnitin Administrator to acquire account setup information (i.e. account ID and join password)
  2. The instructor sets up an instructor Turnitin account on turnitin.com. Please see information for instructors for setup instructions.
  3. The instructor then creates a class on Turnitin. When creating class, the instructor will be prompted for a class enrolment password.
  4. The instructor makes note of the class ID and enrolment password and distributes both to students.
  5. Students setup a student Turnitin account on turnitin.com. Please see Student Account Setup below for setup instructions and information on how to protect students' privacy.
  6. Student enrols into the instructor's class with the class ID and enrolment password provided by the instructor from step 4.

How to Enable Turnitin with Vista

The PowerLink allows Vista users to access Turnitin's plagiarism prevention, PeerMark and GradeMark services, all from within the Vista environment. The Turnitin PowerLink allows instructors to add Turnitin tools on pages as a type of content within Vista (like other PowerLinks). It also adds a new column in Vista's Gradebook. In addition, if the instructor decides to grade students' assignments using Turnitin, the roster sync function can be used to synchronize grade information between Turnitin and Vista.

You can add the Turnitin tool to Vista by going into your Vista course:

  1. Under the "Build" tab (available to Course Designer), and click on "Add Content Link"
  2. Then select the "Turnitin Powerlink" and follow the on screen instructions
  3. You should then be able to access the Turnitin tool under the "Teach" tab as an instructor

Please note that there is no way to merge standalone Turnitin accounts with Vista Turnitin PowerLink accounts.
