Discussion on potential survey questions.4202:32, 21 February 2012

Discussion on potential survey questions.

Research question: Is there a correlation between Canadians opinions of Canada's immigration policies and their views of Canada's multiculturalism?

Some proposed survey questions: 1. What is your satisfaction level of Canada's immigration policies? (1) - not at all satisfied (2) - somewhat dissatisfied (3) - neutral (4) - somewhat satisfied (5) - very satisfied 2. How do you find Canada being multicultural? (1) - not at all multicultural (2) - somewhat NOT multicultural (3) - neutral (4) - somewhat multicultural (5) - very multicultural

(~Jeremia)

Hi, not sure whether we should be posting this in the immigration and multiculturalism board instead, I'll just copy over what we have here and create a discussion on that page as well. I think your questions are a good starting point, in regards to the first question about satisfaction of policies we might be able to add some more detail or one more question. For instance: Do you find Canada's perception of integration and immigration vs the US' perception i.e. mosaic vs. melting pot, to be more successful in regards to integration? Further we could add questions in regards to what people value in potential immigrants. One possible question could be: 1. Based on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being not important and 5 being very important, which of these characteristics/attributes do you value the most in potential immigrants coming to Canada? Potential characteristics: Economic stability. Skin colour other than your own. More likely to fit in, in a western society. Prior knowledge of the language, either English or French. Hope some of this will help us to find five survey questions we can use. Hope more people will bring more input since we are sort of running out of time. (HalvorSannessLightfoot)

Hi all, One possible survey question that I've come up with is this - Do you think that immigration policies promote ethnic diversities in Canada? - 5 being very much and 1 being none

or if I want to make the question more specific,

Based on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being none and 5 being very much, Do you find some ethnic groups to dominate over other groups in terms of the population?

(NaRae)

NaRaeKim08:32, 13 February 2012

I think I have to clarify a bit more for my second question...maybe

Do you find some ethnic groups, who are not Canadian citizens, to dominate over other non-Canadian citizen groups in terms of the population?

Also, I think we have to come up with 5 questions together by this Friday...right?

NaRaeKim01:00, 14 February 2012

Hi NaRaeKim,

I think that your original question, "Do you think that immigration policies promote ethnic diversity in Canada" is a better question than "Do you find some ethnic groups, who are not Canadian citizens, to dominate over other non-Canadian citizen groups in terms of the population". I think that the latter is way to specific and makes you wonder what citizenship has to do in terms of dominating other ethnic groups.

Your former question is great because it is very understandable and people can relate to it better

NishantRao02:10, 21 February 2012

A survey question that I would like to ask would be one of personal percption: "Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: Multiculturalism makes Canada a better place to live."

5- Strongly Agree 4- Agree 3- Neither Agree or Disagree 4- Disagree 5- Strong Disagree

TeresaChen22:18, 13 February 2012

Ok guys since we have quite a lot of input from several people I thought I would sum up the different survey questions everyone have provided, just so that it would be easier to discuss.

So from Jeremia we have: 1.

From Halvor we have: 1. Do you find Canada's perception of integration and immigration vs the US' perception i.e. mosaic vs. melting pot, to be more successful in regards to integration? 2.

From NaRaeKim we have 1. Do you think that immigration policies promote ethnic diversities in Canada? - 5 being very much and 1 being none and 2. Do you find some ethnic groups, who are not Canadian citizens, to dominate over other non-Canadian citizen groups in terms of the population?

Finally we have Teresa 1. "Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: Multiculturalism makes Canada a better place to live." 5- Strongly Agree 4- Agree 3- Neither Agree or Disagree 4- Disagree 5- Strong Disagree

Based on the email we got from Dr. Cutler I think we have to have the questions ready for Wednesday, I'm not certain on this, but in the email we got on the 10 of February he said that we had five days left. So in total we have 7 potential survey questions, I think if anyone wants to add more survey questions they should do so by, 5pm on Tuesday, and then we can have some kind of vote on which 5 questions we all want to use. It would be best if we have the voting done by Tuesday or early Wednesday since we have to have this done on Wednesday, but I'm gonna send an email to Dr. Cutler and asking him when it is due just in case.

HalvorSannessLightfoot02:12, 14 February 2012

Hey Halvor, thanks for taking the initiative and creating this discussion page. I'm just thinking...we want our 5 final survey question to be created according to one research question right? I had suggested a research question with the survey questions I proposed. Is that a research question we want to tackle? I just want to clarify on that. But it already seems like all the proposed survey questions work for that research question. To follow up on that research question, we might also want to ask: 1) Are you an immigrant to Canada? (Yes, No) 2) If so, for how long have you been an immigrant? (# of years) 3) How would you rate your "immigrant experience" on a scale of 1 to 10? (1-cold, 5-lukewarm, 10-hot)

The last question, I've left purposefully not defined "immigrant experience." Thoughts? Do you these questions could be relevant to our proposed research question?

JeremiaChow04:03, 14 February 2012

Your question regarding what characteristics/attributes Canadians value most in potential immigrants coming to Canada is intriguing. What would we be trying to find out from this survey question though? - i.e. what type of information are we trying to extract from this survey question to help us answer the research question?

JeremiaChow04:08, 14 February 2012

How about questions on a gradient? i.e.:

1. How much would you agree with this statement: Canadians respect the cultures and ideologies of different nationalities? a. totally agree b. agree c. neutral d. somewhat disagree e. totally disagree

2. Are you or your parents immigrants? Yes or No. b. If yes how much would you say you've or your parents have encountered racism? i. constantly ii. frequently iii. seldom iv. rarely v. never

Faizahshahban06:58, 14 February 2012

Hi Faizahshahban: I feel that your first question could definitely could give us a lot of insight us as to whether multiculturalism is really working in Canada, however, I am not really sure how much data we will get from the second question. I think that we can definitely work on the second question and make it more enhancing,

Hi Jeremia. Well for the question I proposed it would give us information on Canadians attitudes to immigrants, but I can see that it may not relate all that much to their views on multiculturalism. I think the survey question that you proposed earlier might give us more information on their attitudes. I got a response from Dr. Cutler today about when we have to have our survey questions done by and he said "Same time as assignment 2.", so it looks like we have more time then I originally thought. So I was thinking that we could have everyone's potential survey questions in by Friday and then we can do a vote on them over the weekend. Does this work for everyone?

HalvorSannessLightfoot08:48, 14 February 2012

In regards to Faizahshahban I think using gradients for some of our question could be a very good idea. In regards to your questions I think your first one could give us potential info on how Canadians view multiculturalism and how they view what other Canadians think about it as well. Your second question might be a bit difficult for the survey, since we will only be asking a limited amount of people so it might not provide us with substantial data.

HalvorSannessLightfoot08:54, 14 February 2012

Some other questions I thought about in regards to the research question ( Is there a correlation between Canadians opinions of Canada's immigration policies and their views of Canada's multiculturalism?): How important do you view Canada's immigration policies as a Canadian citizen? 1 - not at all important 2 - somewhat not important 3 - neutral 4 - somewhat important 5 - very important. We could follow up that question on what their views on multiculturalism are, with the question I had first proposed ( How do you find Canada being multicultural?)

JeremiaChow03:00, 15 February 2012

Hi Jeremia,

I really like your question however, I feel that when you ask an average Canadian this question, he/she might not really know what to say. This question lacks a bit of context because immigration policies could mean so many different things. Perhaps you could make this question a bit more specific (ie, does immigration bring economic benefits, satisfy family reunification)

Could we decide on the survey questions by Saturday morning? I'm going to be out of town from Sunday on.

JeremiaChow02:56, 15 February 2012

Sure I was just suggesting an arbitrary day anyways. On Friday I'll probably create another post showing all the potential survey question so that we can make the voting easier. It would probably be best if we can't vote for our own questions so that we won't end up with a stalemate.

HalvorSannessLightfoot07:30, 15 February 2012

Jeremiah but don't we need our research question by Friday? I am a bit confused of what to hand in by Friday...Do we just hand in our survey questions?

NaRaeKim17:36, 15 February 2012

If we are only choosing one research question I think the one that you come up with is good. Since most of the survey questions ask people's opinions on immigration policies that affect their views toward multiculturalism. Other than the one that we've come up with, I might suggest Q: "Does immigration policies in Canada increase people's tolerance towards multiculturalism? - if that makes sense...

and the survey questions I've come up with may answer this question.....

So, by Friday are we voting the questions?

NaRaeKim17:51, 15 February 2012

Well now I'm confused, do we have to hand something in on Friday, but isn't class canceled for Friday? When I emailed Dr. Cutler and asked when we had to have the survey questions done by he said the same time as assignment 2. I'll create a summary post on Thursday night so that we can vote on Friday.

HalvorSannessLightfoot06:54, 16 February 2012

I don't think we hand in our survey questions, doesn't it have to be done online?

COPIED AND PASTED QUESTIONS AND RESPONSESE FROM IMMIGRATION AND MULTICULTURALISM. Sorry guys, I made a mistake and put my questions and responses in the other group so I am just gonna copy and paste my response to Halor Sannes Lightfood

Hi, I think your questions are a good starting point, in regards to the first question about satisfaction of policies we might be able to add some more detail or one more question. I definitely have to agree with HalvorSannesLightfoot. I think that we need to make this more specific as the question is very broad and open ended. Satisfaction of Canada's immigration policies could include the economic potential of immigrants and other issues such as the importance of family reunification/refugees over economic immigrants and vice versa. I am not really sure what HalvorSannesLightfoot means when they say "most likely to fit in a western society". It also seems a little vague so I have tried to further make my survey question more specific. My survey question would be. 1. Based on a scale from 1 to 5, with one being not important and 5 being very important, what immigration policy should Canada undertake. -A greater increase emphasis placed on family reunification and faster processing times for those who wish to sponsor their family members. -A greater emphasis on refugees through greater intake -An emphasis on more economic immigrants who are most unlikely to make a substantial economic contribution to Canada -An emphasis on younger immigrants who have graduated from Canadian Universities -An overall decrease in the total number of immigrants accepted to Canada (currently 250,000 immigrants on average are admitted to Canada) Hi. Thanks for posting. I just want to make sure that this page is the same as Immigration&Multiculturalism, if not I have been posting in the wrong one since that is where I originally signed up. if it is the person that posted this last one is welcome to discuss this in the Immigration&Multiculturalism page, we have an ongoing discussion about survey questions so feel free to post your contributions there, if this is not the same page, feel free to delete whatever I have written. (HalvorSannessLightfoot)

NishantRao13:38, 18 February 2012

Thank you for posting here. So we have started voting on which five questions we would like to use. So if you want you can look through the discussion and vote on the 5 questions you think we should use.

HalvorSannessLightfoot00:14, 19 February 2012

Wow, since last week so many people have participated! Yay! yeah I think as Jeremiah said, we don't have to come up with our 5 questions by Monday...as long as we've participated throughout the two weeks. Thanks Halvor for creating the google doc! I am playing with it but still unsure of how to do this...haha but I will work with it more and hopefully vote for two more :)

NaRaeKim04:12, 20 February 2012

Actually Jeremiah created the google doc. Well I've been under the impression that we were supposed to have 5 survey questions ready for today. I'm gonna send Dr. Cutler an email right now and ask him about it though.

HalvorSannessLightfoot00:16, 21 February 2012

Personally I feel that this is probably the best question to use:

"Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: Multiculturalism makes Canada a better place to live." 5- Strongly Agree 4- Agree 3- Neither Agree or Disagree 4- Disagree 5- Strong Disagree.

This question is one of the only ones that participants can really relate to as multiculturalism affects them in their daily lives. It is also non biased and easy to understand. This is just my opinion though
