"Purple Hibiscus" by Chimamanda Adichie takes us into the lives of the Achike family, who live in Enugu, Nigeria, during a time of political upheaval due to a military coup. The story is centered around Kambili, the second child and narrator, who carries the heavy burden of a painful past marked by years of abuse inflicted by her father. The abuse, a harrowing experience both witnessed and endured, left Kambili deeply introverted and painfully shy. In a poignant moment of reflection, she admitted, 'I was not sure what my laughter sounded like,' recalling a dream where she found herself laughing. Within the dream, the laughter felt foreign to her, a sound she couldn't attribute to herself. It was a stark realization, as she had grown accustomed to rarely, if ever, hearing the sound of her own laughter.

Kambili's father, a prosperous businessman who outwardly presents as a devoted churchgoer celebrated for his philanthropy, is a figure of complexity. "During his sermons Father Benedict usually referred to the pope, papa & Jesus – in that order," a stark example of his public image. Kambili has a complicated mix of feelings for him, including adoration and fear. She desperately wants to please him and avoid his violent outbursts. Her mother, who is also a victim of her husband's abuse, finds comfort in a collection of delicate glass figurines depicting ballet dancers, which she carefully maintains.

The novel explores themes of abusive power and the lasting effects of colonialism, portraying a family trying to reconcile their public image with their private struggles.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Author of Purple Hibiscus

For me, 'Purple Hibiscus' is not just a novel; it's a profound source of influence. Adichie's storytelling has not only deepened my understanding of the devastating consequences of unchecked power but has also inspired me to explore the complexities of human relationships, delve into the lasting scars left by traumatic experiences, and embrace the courage it takes to break free from oppressive forces. This book has played a significant role in shaping my perspective and motivating me to shed light on the often-hidden struggles that shape individuals and societies, all while celebrating the enduring human spirit that perseveres even in the darkest of times.
