Course:MTRL466-adhesivebonding/Group2/September 9

From UBC Wiki
Project Name Adhesive Bonding
Group 2
Current Meeting September 9, 2011
Minutes Prepared By Mandy Chen

Attendees

  • Mandy
  • Shauna
  • Kyle
  • Andy
  • Zoe

Minutes

Progress report

  • Weekly, sent before midnight Thursday
  • Includes: agenda, things that are accomplished, questions and or attachments
  • Post progress report including minutes on UBC wiki for record purpose

Weekly Meeting

  • 1 secretary
  • 1 discussion leader (roles can be switched around)

Project

  • Adhesion
    • avoids corrosion as long it is completely sealed
    • does not deteriorate
    • good use for repairs
  • Gluing aluminum 5000 (cold rolled) and aluminum 6000 (precipitation hardening) together (inner and outer)
    • Curing time can be put it the oven or use heat lamp to be reduced
  • Heat treatment
    • Can weaken the 5000 (recrystallization) and weaken/strengthen 6000 Aluminum (precipitation hardening)
    • Options: underage 6000….
  • QUESTION:
Feasibility of doing adhesive bonding, paint baking, heat treatment for 6000 altogether.
  • Compute:
    • Amount of curing- kinetics, heat release
    • Strength of 5000 and 6000
    • Heat transfer model (furnace to part, phase transformation)

Goal

  • Have the models running and validated by the midterm
  • After the midterm:
    • Put models together
    • Optimization

Next Week

Each person pick a topic to be an expert for later

  1. Adhesive bonding (talk to Goran, cure kinetic model) - Shauna
  2. Heat transfer model (equation, parameters- variable, fixed, heat transfer coefficient in oven)- Kyle
  3. Mechanical property model
  • Precipitation hardening in 6000 series- Andy
  • Recrystallization (recovery) in 5000 series- Mandy

Literature Review

Find an extra on top of Chad’s- try not to use websites; use books and journals.

  1. Impetus driving force of Aluminum:- Mandy
  • Quantitatively compare Al to steel
  1. Types of aluminum alloys that are specifically used in cars: - Kyle
  • 6000 vs 5000- Chemistry(composition), strengthening(how), location in cars
  1. Basic review of joining aluminum:- Shauna
  • Options, advantages and disadvantages
  1. Paint bake cycle:- Andy
  • How is it performed?

Other Tasks

  • Outline for progress up to the midterm
  • Gantt chart week by week before the midterm
  • Meeting next week via Skype on Friday at 12:30 PM
