Current Meeting September 16, 2011
Minutes Prepared By Mandy Chen

Attendees

  • Mandy
  • Shauna
  • Zoe
  • Kyle
  • Andy

Agenda

Aluminum Alloys

Mandy leads

  • Advantages and challenges
  • Comparing aluminum to steel

Aluminum in Cars

Kyle leads

  • Aluminum parts
  • Compositions of aluminum alloys in cars presently
  • Treatments used for aluminum alloys

Adhesive Bonding

Shauna leads

  • Advantages and disadvantages to adhesive bonding compared to other joining methods

Paint Bake Cycle

Andy leads

  • What it is
  • Process
    • Electrocoating
    • Powder coating

Future Steps

Shauna leads

  • Literature review for models
    • Adhesive bonding: Shauna, Mandy
    • Heat transfer: Andy, Kyle
    • Precipitation hardening: Zoe
    • Recovery: Mandy
  • Preliminary models

Questions

  • Clarify: Do we get the 6000 series at whichever point in the aging curve that we want?
  • Is there a specific 5000 or 6000 series to use? Unable to find mention in literature - recommendations?
  • Clarify: Mention of powder coating in meeting - little mention in literature.
  • Which alluminum alloy parts in car are we looking for specifically to do the model? (door panels? hood? BIW?)

Minutes

Paint Baking

  • Research challenge-Could only find research on electro deposition
  • Could not find the time and temperature for aluminum paint baking process
  • ACTION: contact specific company to obtain info- Chad is looking into it then directs the contact information later

Q and A From agenda

  • Model should be able to model any condition of the 6000 alloys. It is NOT a parameter at this point
  • General model such that by changing parameters and constants we can still get the model to work

Literature review from last week

  • Review everyone’s summary
  • Critically review those summaries professionally
  • Chad will provide specific comments on Monday
  • REFERNCE!

Actions for next week

  • Adhesion: Meet with Goran (with Judy) next week to dicuss
    • Read literature on curing kinetics, predictions and see what other information we need for our model
    • Obtain equations and ask Goran about them
  • Heat Transfer
    • Look into Transport I and Modelling
    • Look into equations
    • Think carefully about what to do such as assumptions
    • Start simple- add complexity along the way
  • Precipitation Hardening
    • Mtrl 381- look into theories
    • Mtrl 378, 361, 365
    • Pick out equations
  • Recovery
    • Master thesis
    • Callister
    • Equations
    • Bibliography

Next Friday

  • Models, equations- figure out which ones to use
  • Chad is available on Wednesday if we need his help
  • Simplest situation, complexity later\
  • Programs?
